Service area business

A Google Business Profile configuration for businesses that go to the customer rather than receive them. The address is hidden and a set of served areas is declared instead.

Why it matters on an HVAC site

Most HVAC contractors qualify, and many are configured wrongly in one direction or the other. A company with a genuine trade counter hides its address and loses the storefront signal; a company operating from a house shows an address that is a house.

Declaring service areas does not extend proximity. The areas tell Google where you work; the ranking calculation still starts from a location Google holds for you, which is why a business declaring thirty towns still ranks mainly near one.

How to check it yourself

  1. Check the profile configuration against the reality of how customers are served.
  2. A rank grid before and after, because the change affects how the business is treated across the area rather than at one point.
  3. Confirm the declared areas match the areas the site claims, since a mismatch is a contradiction across two surfaces you own.

Worked through in numbers

A contractor with a real trade counter and walk-in parts sales is configured as a service area business with the address hidden, on the advice that it would "help with the surrounding towns".

A grid shows no better coverage across the area than comparable businesses showing an address, and the profile has lost the storefront treatment entirely.

Restoring the address and keeping the declared service areas returned the storefront signal without narrowing anything. The original change had cost something and bought nothing.
