Why it matters on an HVAC site
The primary category is the largest single lever, and it is frequently wrong. A business whose work is 80% air conditioning listed under "Heating contractor" has told Google something inaccurate about itself in the most weighted field available.
Below the category sit the services list and the attributes, both of which are structured fields most contractor profiles leave half empty. An empty field is not neutral; it is an absence of evidence for a match.
How to check it yourself
- Compare your primary category against the primary categories of the businesses actually ranking for the target query.
- Count services populated against the full list Google offers for that category, which is longer than most people realise.
- Count attributes set against attributes available, keeping the two separate since they are different fields.
Worked through in numbers
A contractor listed as "Heating contractor" is invisible for air-conditioning queries across the whole area despite good proximity and 200 reviews.
All five businesses ranking for "ac repair near me" in that area use "HVAC contractor" or "Air conditioning contractor" as primary. The services list on the client profile has 3 of 41 available services populated.
Changing the primary category and populating the services list moved the profile into the pack for air-conditioning queries within three weeks. Reviews, address and site were untouched.
