Glossary Link building

Disavow

A file submitted through Search Console listing links a site owner wants discounted. Google’s own guidance is that most sites should not use it.

Why it matters on an HVAC site

It is routinely presented to contractors as maintenance. It is not maintenance; it is a remedy for a specific situation, which is a manual action or a known history of buying links.

A disavow file built from a tool’s toxicity report can remove links that were helping, and there is no undo that works on the original timescale.

How to check it yourself

  1. Check Search Console for a manual action. No manual action is the normal state and means there is nothing to remedy.
  2. Establish whether links were deliberately built, from the anchor profile and from asking the previous agency.
  3. If a file is warranted, build it from links you know were bought rather than from a vendor score.

Worked through in numbers

A contractor arrives with a disavow file containing 2,900 domains, uploaded by a previous agency in 2022.

No manual action existed then or now. Reviewing a sample of the 2,900 found the county newspaper, a manufacturer dealer page and two supplier listings among them, all disavowed automatically because a tool scored them low.

The file was replaced with one containing the 40 domains from a genuine paid-link campaign the owner confirmed. The three legitimate links were already lost to time, which is the part that could not be undone.
