Glossary Local SEO

Citation

A reference to a business’s name, address and phone number on another site, with or without a link. Directories are the familiar form; trade bodies, suppliers and local organisations are the useful ones.

Why it matters on an HVAC site

Citations are sold in bulk and are worth very little in bulk. A package of 300 listings on directories nobody visits is the classic low-value contractor deliverable, and it is easy to sell because the deliverable is countable.

The ones that carry weight for the trades are the ones a real person might use: the manufacturer dealer locator, the trade association register, the local chamber, the supplier. Those are a different job from a bulk submission.

How to check it yourself

  1. Audit which platforms carry the business and whether each record is correct, resolving the business through each platform’s own search rather than from a link on the company site.
  2. Compare coverage against the businesses actually ranking in the pack for the target query, not against a generic list.
  3. Score consistency separately from coverage. Forty listings that disagree are worse than twelve that match.

Worked through in numbers

A contractor bought a 300-citation package in 2023. An audit found 214 live, of which 168 carried the pre-move address.

Of the three competitors in the pack, all three appeared on the same manufacturer dealer locator and two on the state trade association register. The client was on neither, and both were free.

The 168 wrong records were corrected and the two missing high-value ones were added. The package had produced volume and missed the two listings the ranking set had in common.
